As London is preparing for the 2012 summer Olympic Games, the safety of the certain areas is considered as a great concern. Therefore the authorities decided to build an electric perimeter fence around the 240-hectare Olympic Park.

The fence was designed for people to be able to see through it and watch the Olympic facilities being built. It understood the electricity would provide a short but uncomfortable shock. Despite its 5,000 volt power topping, officials claim it would not harm neither the public nor wildlife.

The mass of the project is enormous with as many as 2,500 workers constructing the Olympic stadium while 1,500 more are expected to arrive by the end of the year. In 2009 these numbers are to be raised up to 9,000. Entire work force will be facing biometric screening to prevent the venues from unauthorized access.

More than 1,500 police officers will be called for extra hours during the Games to ensure the safety. Even the retired ones will be brought back into duty, as well as explosives sniffing dogs and the Army itself. Even more extras are planned for the peak events, such as marathons and road races, where 5,500 officers are expected to be present. The Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur says the force is dealing with the £600 million budget. However, there are signs and rumours about the figures rising up to £1.4 billion.

“We will need specialist firearms teams from forces all over the country, including the West Midlands and Yorkshire,” he said. He pointed out that firearms officers would need to be trained up over two or three years to gain the necessary skills and this could not be done in just six months”, says Mr. Ghaffur.

Despite these massive investments look like a big waste of money for many and the electric fence is compared to the concentration camps, it seems, that is what is required for the world of today. The world with constant fear of someone making a massacre out of an event that should normally make everyone feel peaceful and happy
